Water Disinfection through UV-Light

The disinfection of water is carried out by utilizing ultraviolet light to damage the DNA of micro-organisms. The process of UV water purification is common knowledge and already in use worldwide. The problem in the past was the increasing drop in power due to reduced radiation power. This is caused by the biofilm formed on the casing tube of the UV-lamp.

Solution:

The combination of UV-light and ultrasound.

Ultrasound – Mode of Operation

Through the intensive near-field exposure to radiation by ultrasound, germ agglomerates and amoebas which serve as host cells for legionella are damaged. As a result of this pre-treatment, the germs can be reached more effectively by the UV-light. The ultrasonic waves clean the casing tube of the UV-lamp and the reactor walls. In addition, the ultrasonic sound prevents the development of biofilm on the casing tube of the lamp.

Advantages:

  • Higher performance (15%)
  • Lower energy consumption
  • Less maintenance
  • Without the use of chemicals

Water Filtration using Membrane Technology

Membrane technology is a physical process used to separate a mixture of substances, in which membranes function like filters. Membrane processes are classified as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis, depending on the dimensions and molecular mass of the substances to be separated. Membrane technology has developed into an advanced key technology directed at closing the water cycle and recycling this valuable resource. Membrane technology has established itself and proven its efficacy as a low-cost, ecological alternative to other separation processes used in waste water treatment such as vaporization, adsorption and absorption, chemical separation or distillation. Thanks to the high efficiency of the cleaning process, standards of advanced waste water treatment can be met, and the resources of groundwater and water courses can be protected. In addition, the technology can be used in many other areas such as filtration of process water for the industrial sector or filtration of other fluids such as oil or milk.

Ultrasound – Mode of Operation

Aquaworx AG developed a cost-effective process of optimizing the filtration results of membrane technology by using duplex operation (or multiplex operation depending on the flow rate). The unique combination of this technology with ultrasound processes delivers two further key benefits in liquid filtration: ultrasound is not only a highly efficient method of cleaning the filter membranes, but also inactivates and eliminates bacteria in their earliest stages of development.

Advantages

  • Low operating and maintenance costs
  • Low space requirements
  • Permanent high performance through constant self-cleaning during filtration
  • Pre-treatment of germs during filtration via ultrasound (cavitation)
  • Saltwater-resistant ultrasonic pipes
  • Variable filtration mode (Cross Flow/Dead End)
  • Long operating time/lifetime
  • Extendable to a multiplex system (parallel operation)
  • Without the use of chemicals
